Song from the ’90s that’s stuck in my head today: “Pepper,” the Butthole Surfers
I get ’90s songs stuck in my head all the time. I could conjecture and analyze as to why, I guess, but it doesn’t really matter. I’m not a big ’80s fan like everyone else seems to be, but I think the ’90s were when I really fell in love with and started paying attention to music. Plus, the music was better than it was in the ’80s. There, I said it.
So, I think I’m going to inaugurate this as a new occasional feature here on Teh Blawg. This song, though I haven’t heard it on the radio in years, arbitrarily plopped itself down in my consciousness this morning. I remember when it came out when I was in high school, I thought it was about p0rn. That’s because I misunderstood and thought the lyrics were “they were all in love with Diane, they were doing it in Texas.” Isn’t Diane a p0rn star name? Dunno. Regardless, the lyrics are actually “…all in love with dyin’” which is pretty interesting.
In any case, it’s a weird song with a weird video, and here it is. Is that Ponch?

I never heard it as “Diane” before. That’s great. Now that’s the only way I’ll hear it.
I’m digging on my Whatever boxset lately. Surely you’ve heard it. A great, great collection of 90s songs.
I have NOT heard of such a thing! Must do some Googling.
Yeah… that’s Eric/Ponch.
Ah, thanks.
Love, love LOVE!!!
Oh man, I still love this song (and the Butthole Surfers)!
I am a huge 80s music fan, but I definitely identify more with 90s music, I suppose because I remember more of the 90s than I do the 80s. And I guess I can’t pick which decade of music I like better because they are so, so different. I can’t even compare the two.
I know what you mean. I dig a lot of music from the 80s after the fact, but it’s only because I can see the roots of so much that I like now. I didn’t like much of it–with the possible exception of Bon Jovi
–when I was actually living it.
